The Limestone District School Board is saddened by the tragic events that occurred in downtown Kingston yesterday afternoon. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with all those affected. Our thanks and thoughts are also with the first responders from Kingston Police and Frontenac Paramedics who responded quickly and with compassion to ensure our community is safe.

We cannot downplay the impact these kinds of events have on our students, families and staff. Our reactions to unexpected and tragic incidents can shape how children and youth experience these events, and can influence their perceptions of safety.

The best way to help those affected is to use your careful judgment and empathy.

The following suggestions may help you understand what some students may be experiencing, and provide you some supportive ways to respond.

  • Listen and create a school environment that acknowledges all feelings.
  • Do not bring media coverage into the classroom unless there is a specific educational reason to do so. Students should be given the choice not to participate.
  • Identify children who will be most affected by the tragedy. For example, children who have recently lost a loved one, are depressed and anxious, traumatized children and children who have been victims of violence. Provide support that is age appropriate and based on the level of need.
  • For older children, provide a forum for discussion with adults skilled at fostering open and productive messages that build reassurance and therapeutic insight, such as a counsellor.
  • If students need to speak to someone, please contact your school who will contact our Educational Services team so that supports can be arranged.

Anyone who is distressed or overwhelmed by these events are encouraged to call Victims Services at 613-548-4834 or visit their website.

Let’s work together to take care of each other.
