Trustees of the Limestone District School Board approved a balanced budget for the 2020-2021 school year, with total operating expenditures of $254.1 million, which is an increase of $5.2 million dollars over last year’s revised estimates. The budget was approved at a Special Meeting of the Board July 13, 2020.

“We have a balanced budget that directs resources in a manner that upholds the priorities, values and objectives of this Board, as outlined in our Strategic Plan and supports the LDSB pillars of wellness, innovation and collaboration,” says Board Chair Suzanne Ruttan, and Trustee representing South Frontenac.

The Capital Expenditures Budget for next year is approximately $24.5 million and is used for School Condition Improvements and School Renewal capital projects.

“During this extraordinary year, and despite significant delays through the budget process, staff presented Trustees with a balanced budget that directs as many resources as possible to students,” adds Vice-Chair Laurie French, Chair of the Budget Committee, and Trustee for Greater Napanee.

The majority of the operating budget – almost 79% – is directed to instruction and relates directly to the classroom - teachers, supply staff, educational assistants, para-professionals, technicians - and aligns with the provincial labour frameworks. The next most significant expense is pupil accommodation – school operations and maintenance – which accounts for 10% of the overall operating budget.

Trustees are monitoring and tracking costs associated with COVID-19 precautions and re-entry plans for government reimbursement.

“Trustees understand the government’s fiscal priorities, but we also believe there may be ways to create efficiencies that do not have any potential negative impact on students or staff,” concludes Ruttan. Trustees will continue to engage with the government at every opportunity, to ensure Limestone’s concerns are heard.
