More than 1,300 students provided input into the Limestone District School Board’s recent survey to help inform its Mental Health and Substance Use Strategy.

The voluntary survey, which was shared with students, families, community partners and staff earlier this year, is intended to help us better understand student mental health, well-being and substance use. The Board is currently drafting its Mental Health and Substance Use Strategy for 2021-2024. This strategy helps the board make decisions about how to support student mental health and well-being at school.

A snapshot shows of early results from 408 elementary and 904 secondary students suggests that students appreciate talking openly about mental health at school, check ins from staff and knowing where to access supports. Fifty per cent of students reported turning to a friend when they need support or information on mental health while 21 per cent turn to a teacher.

“Our mental health strategy provides a road map to help drive the work already being done in our system to best support students and families,” says LDSB Mental Health Lead Laura Conboy. “This student voice and experience are key to helping us create a robust strategy.”

The surveys completed by Grade 7 to 12 students, families, staff and community partners are currently being reviewed to develop collaborative goals and key strategies to achieve these goals.
