Trustees of the Limestone District School Board have confirmed the appointment of Krishna Burra as Director of Education and Secretary to the Board, effective August 4, 2020. A motion to approve the appointment was passed at a Special Meeting of the Board on July 6, 2020.

Mr. Burra is currently a Superintendent of Education with Limestone. Mr. Burra has held a variety of significant leadership roles during his almost 25 years in public education, including a classroom teacher, department head, vice principal, and supervising principal. 

“On behalf of the Trustees of the Limestone District School Board, I am pleased to welcome Mr. Burra as our new Director of Education,” says Limestone District School Board Chair Suzanne Ruttan. “Mr. Burra has always demonstrated a passion for and commitment to student achievement and well-being during his more than two decades of progressive and collaborative leadership in Limestone. We are thrilled to work with him over the coming years to promote our strategic priorities of wellness, innovation and collaboration as we continue to address the needs of every student within our district.”

In 2010, Mr. Burra joined the senior team at Limestone as Assistant to the Director and Supervisor of Safe and Caring Schools before taking on his current role as Superintendent of Schools, Program, and Information Technology Services. During his tenure with Limestone, Mr. Burra’s portfolio has included a range of responsibilities focused on secondary curriculum, professional learning, Indigenous education, equity and inclusion , international education, outdoor education, e-learning, and supervision of the Kingston Collegiate & Vocational Institute/Kingston Secondary School Family of Schools. 

“I am both honoured and excited for this new opportunity to support the students, families and staff of the Limestone District School Board,” says Mr. Burra. “I look forward to collaborating with Trustees, staff, students, families, community partners, and all members of our school communities to enhance the good work already taking place in our schools across the district.”

Mr. Burra holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University and a Master of Education from Charles Sturt University. At the provincial level, he has served on the Board of Directors for the Ontario Public Supervisory Officers Association (OPSOA) since 2017 and was selected President Elect for the 2019-2020 school year. Mr. Burra is a previous Queen’s University Faculty of Education Associate Teacher of the Year, and Queen’s Baillie Award winner for excellence in secondary teaching. 

Born and raised in Kingston, Mr. Burra is a graduate of Loyalist Collegiate & Vocational Institute. He lives in Kingston with his wife, who is a secondary teacher with Limestone, and their three children.

Mr. Burra will work on a transition plan with the Senior Staff and retiring Director of Education Debra Rantz before assuming his duties in early August.
