The Limestone District School Board has established three positions for Student Trustees to provide for the interests of students within its school system. One Student Trustee is elected to represent urban, one Student Trustee is elected to represent rural schools, and one Student Trustee is elected to represent Indigenous students to ensure accurate representation for all secondary students in the board.
2022-2023 Student Trustees:
- Julia Kolosov, Indigenous Student Trustee, attending Kingston Secondary School
- Mohammed Elshrief, Urban Student Trustee, attending Frontenac Secondary School
- Elayna Jackson, Rural Student Trustee attending Granite Ridge Education Centre
The Student Trustee position provides for the active involvement of students in their education and allows them to provide greater insight into student activities, programs and needs. This important role also encourages more student involvement in the district’s governance activities, and a greater awareness and understanding of mutual issues between and among the Board, school staff and students.
One Student Trustee is elected from our rural schools (Ernestown Secondary School, Granite Ridge Education Centre, Napanee District Secondary School, North Addington Education Centre and Sydenham High School). Another Student Trustee is elected from our urban schools (Bayridge Secondary School, Frontenac Secondary School, Kingston Secondary School, Loyalist Collegiate & Vocational Institute, and La Salle Secondary School). Students enrolled in the Secondary Virtual School (SVS) are eligible in participate in the elections for Student Trustee, and would represent the position (Rural or Urban) according to their home school. A third Student Trustee is elected to represent Indigenous students in the board.
Student Trustees participate in voting of the Board of Trustees, however, their votes are non-binding.
OSTA-AECO and OPSBA Student Trustee Handbook provides Student Trustees and
Trustees of the Board with information to fully understand the requirements of the student trustee role.
Student Trustee Elections
The position of Student Trustee is open to all senior students of the Limestone District School Board who meet the eligibility criteria listed on the Student Trustee Application Form. This policy extends the candidacy to any student who will be a senior student (in Grade 11, 12, or 12+) during the year in which they will be serving as a Trustee.
Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria for the next academic year and submit a completed online application form by the due date. Candidates must prepare a speech not exceeding two minutes to present to the incoming and outgoing members of the InterSchool Council who vote on the positions. The same application process is used for the Indigenous Student Trustee, however, this student is selected by Indigenous Student representatives from each secondary school. Submitted applications will include a video recording in the event a live speech to the electors is not possible. The elections are generally held in the early winter for the following school year. The Student Trustees may occupy the position for a one-year term only unless they are subsequently re-elected during regular Student Trustee elections.
Students are encouraged to reach out to current Student Trustees if they have questions or would like to learn more about the position.
Application Forms:
Student Trustee applications for the 2023-24 school year are now closed. Election results will be made public by March 2023.
