The Limestone District School Board is saddened to learn of the recent mass burial site near the former Marieval Residential School in Saskatchewan.

This latest unearthing, on top of those uncovered at the former Kamloops Residential School in British Columbia, and other locations in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, is beyond heartbreaking. These are vivid and disturbing reminders of the violence and genocide perpetrated on Indigenous children, families and communities.

We share our condolences with the families and communities affected by these horrific acts. Flags at the Education Centre and all school sites will be flown at half-mast until further notice.

We will take time to reflect and consult with Indigenous leaders and communities to determine respectful and healing next steps. We are conscious of making statements without causing further harm to survivors.

In the meantime, Limestone recommits to our important role in educating our school communities about the shameful legacy of residential schools, and the ongoing need for Truth and ongoing and meaningful Reconciliation.
